Poenari Fortress, place of refuge for Vlad Dracula Tepes (the Impaler)

Poenari Fortress was built most likely in the 14th century, as a refuge. It was reinforced during Vlad Dracula's reign by the noblemen who were unfaithful. In 1462, the fortress was under siege by the Ottoman army, led by Radu the Handsome, Vlad Dracula's half brother. Facing defeat, Vlad's wife committed suicide, jumping off the fortress, in Arges river. Vlad Dracula managed to escape to Transylvania, with the help of some villagers, having his horse's shoes switched backwards. This marked the end of his second reign.

"I climbed the stairs and looked through the window. The view was magnificent and stared at it. The castle is right on the edge of a big pit. A stone thrown out of the window would fall 1,000 feet, without touching anything. Everywhere you look, there's an ocean of pine trees..." (Bram Stoker's Dracula).

To get to the fortress, you have to climb 1.480 stairs!
